Classics I Read in 2009

Ok, I did cheat here a bit due to some of the classes I took, which included one that was a survey on English Literature from the Enlightenment to the Victorians and another that was on the works of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Then of course there was Proust (I’m saving the last volume til I’m good and ready):

  • The Adventures of Huck Finn, Mark Twain
  • The Sound and the Fury, William Faulkner
  • The Brothers Karamazov; The Double; Notes from the Underground , Dostoevsky
  • Childhood; various short fiction; re-read Anna Karenina, Tolstoy
  • Le Temps Perdu (6 of 7 volumes), Marcel Proust
  • Gulliver’s Travels, Jonathan Swift
  • Two Treatises on Government, John Locke
  • Utopia, Thomas More
  • Portrait of a Lady, Henry James (half-finished)
  • started the collected short stores of Gogol
  • A Good Man is Hard to Find, Flannery O’Conner
  • re-read Emma, Jane Austen
  • re-read short stories by Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne and poems by Keats, Wordsworth, Blake, Tennyson, Arnold, Pope
  • the poems of Cattulus, Petrarch, Baudelaire, Rilke, Shakespeare’s Sonnets, Ruben Dario

I swear there were more…
